The Power of the Pause: Ending the Day Well
We often talk about productivity in terms of what we do during the day.
The meetings we attend.
The tasks we complete.
The goals we tick off the list.
But recently I’ve been reflecting on something much simpler — how we end the day.
One of my favourite moments isn’t always the big achievement or the final task completed. Sometimes it’s the moment I pull up on the drive after a productive day.
Before I go inside, I pause.
Just for a few minutes, sometimes longer.
Sometimes I sit in silence.
Sometimes I put on a piece of classical music.
Sometimes I scroll through social media and catch up with the world for a moment.
It’s a small pocket of time that belongs only to me.
A tiny decompression bubble between one part of the day ending and the next beginning.
We often move straight from work mode into home mode without a transition.
One moment we’re answering emails, solving problems, or supporting others… and the next we’re stepping into family life, cooking dinner, or trying to relax.
Without a pause, it can feel like we’re carrying the whole day with us.
That short moment in the car allows me to reset.
To breathe.
To leave the workday where it belongs.
It’s not about doing something big or dramatic. It’s about creating a simple ritual that helps you switch gears.
Your ritual doesn’t have to look like mine.
It might be:
The important thing isn’t what you do.
It’s that you allow yourself a small moment to close one chapter of the day before opening the next.
At The Cottage Club we talk a lot about action, accountability, and getting business done. But part of productivity is also learning how to pause and reset.
So here’s something to reflect on:
What’s one small ritual that helps you finish your workday and move into the rest of your day?
Sometimes the smallest habits can make the biggest difference.
